The Rotary Club of Community Action Against Human Trafficking received a Global Grant to successfully reintegrate women incarcerated in the Shawnee County Jail into the community. During our community needs assessment we learned that female recidivism in the county jail was more than 90% because there were no reintegration programs in the jail.
We began the Intersection to Care (ITC) program in 2023 and it has grown to include multiple facets including: University of Kansas technology classes, Meditation and Movement, Health Choices, Doula support, Art Therapy, and a Mentorship program. We have 12 Rotarians who have completed trauma informed training to serve a mentors to women while they are incarcerated and after release. The ITC program includes a part time Resource Liaison on-site at the jail to coordinate programming and meet with participants. Upon release, we provide “Rotary Cares kits” of basic clothing and health & beauty supplies to women who participate in our programs in the jail. The ITC program is receiving very positive feedback from the women who are now successfully reintegrating and staying out of jail!
